Will we still be using the Shopify CDN with headless?
Whether or not you're still using the Shopify CDN in a headless Shopify setup depends solely on how the build has been implemented, and where data is sourced from.
Many of the Javascript frameworks used for the development of headless Shopify stores have innate image/asset optimization tooling, and are simultaneously served via CDN – particularly in the case of static builds. Where this is the case, it's likely images will be served via the same CDN as the new frontend, rather than Shopify's. This can have a positive effect on performance as DNS lookups would be reduced.
Takeway: In many headless builds, Shopify CDN is rendered redundant, but can still have a purpose where Shopify-hosted assets are used on the storefront (such as product images, if these are being pulled from Shopify).
