Pet Printed, who operate a number of Shopify Plus stores, wanted to deploy a new product configurator to allow customers to design personalized storybooks for children—featuring their own pets.

For its existing product line, the company was utilizing a SaaS provider to provide personalization. However, this solution was limited in its ability to provide complex, multi-step customizations — and did not provide the high quality print-ready file generation that was desired. Beyond this, their existing provider did not cater to the nuanced user experience requirements for a product configurator of this type.

The client wanted to simultaneously achieve a high level of in-depth personalization while fully automating the print-ready file generation process. The client wanted the infrastructure to be reusable, and for the solution to scale across multiple nuanced products. Each book would present numerous points of customization, each with its own set of facets and dependencies.

In terms of print, the client desired a completely hands-off solution, that would automatically prepare, generate, and dispatch print-ready PDF files directly to the print supplier. Due to their high order volume, manual intervention for each orderwas not an option: everything had to be seamless, reliable, and instant.

Because the print files would be generated without human input or intervention, absolute perfection in quality and execution was required — at all points of the process.

Cocoon proposed and developd a custom 2D product configurator for Pet Printed, to enable the delivery of a first-rate user experience, coupled with full print-on-demand automation post-purchase. The configurator was architected specifically with the view to support multiple products of varying complexity, and therefore required a backend that was modular, flexible, and able to scalable.

Importantly, Pet Printed operates a fast-paced operation, releasing new products frequently. A visual backend interface was developed for the client, to allow for autonomous management of configurable products, their parameters, dependencies, and related print templates. This holisitc, carefully planned approach would ensure that the client had the ability to continually update, refine, and release customizable print-on-demand books to their various Shopify stores over time.
